Celebrating Día de los Muertos 

City Place Plaza will also host this year's annual Día de los Muertos Celebration, schedule for Saturday, November 1, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. The free community event will kick off with a traditional indigenous performance by the Azteca Dance Group from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m., followed by a lively lineup of music throughout the evening. The Latin and variety band Shekere takes the stage at 5:00 p.m. and again at 6:30 p.m., with Tres Amigos Mariachi Band performing from 6:00 to 6:30 p.m.

3. Do you offer a place to drop off recycling? Yes! Our recycling drop off is located a few steps away from the Demonstration Kitchen on the first floor. It is the only area recycling can be dropped off.
4. Where are the trash chutes? Located by #34 stack of apartments and within the Parking Garage.
5. How do I get the fire pit outside to work? There is a specific remote needed for this cozy amenity. The remote can be checked out in the office. We just need to hold a valid government-issued ID while you use it.

After finding the best dog friendly apartment for you and your furry friend, your focus turns to move preparation. With so much to do, don’t forget that moving to an apartment with a dog requires some additional planning. 

Moving can be a stressful time for pets as well as humans, and living in an apartment with a dog is challenging at times. To help avoid some of that stress and issues that commonly occur, we asked Heidi, a resident of The Mark who lives with her two dogs, Gracie and Max, for tips. She shares them here.

What should someone know before moving into an apartment with a dog?

If your pet is coming from a yard situation and has freedom, there will be an adjustment period. Sharing elevators was not easy for one of our dogs, so it took training and timing. Trying to learn others’ schedules with their dogs by observing over time allowed us to pick potty and walk times that weren’t as busy. You need to clean up every time after your dogs potty, be aware of other dogs, and use a leash at all times. In addition, stay back from elevator doors in case another dog is getting off to avoid issues. 

What tip can you provide to make moving day less stressful for a dog?

On moving day, I would recommend placing your dog in daycare in order to set up familiar places in the home before the pet arrives. 

What can someone do to help their pet adjust to a new apartment?

Use familiar comforts from your previous home including bed, toys, bowls, etc. 

Any tips to help make an apartment more dog-friendly?

One of our dogs loves boxes, so we must make sure all boxes are off the floor. We also shut off certain areas when we are gone. 

What are some ways to pet-proof your apartment to help avoid damage?

Close off carpeted areas to avoid accidents in that space. Provide familiar items for pets with anxiety.

Any problems you've experienced? If so, what was the solution?

Our older dog had issues holding its urination for very long. The vet gave us medicine that really helped, and 4-5 potty walks a day. Sometimes a pet sitter was used for some of the walks. 

What dogs do you think are best for living in an apartment and why? 

I think smaller dogs are better for apartment living or any dog 55 lbs. and under. Also, dogs that are not high strung because loneliness causes anxiety and barking when owners are gone. 

How do you keep a dog from barking and disturbing other residents while you’re away? 

Managing a dog’s barking can be difficult. I would recommend a video camera to provide treats so that the pet can see you. (You can learn about a few different dog treat-dispensing cameras at Technobark.) Also, you can have a pet sitter visit and play with them to help alleviate the barking.

How do you help keep your dog from feeling lonely when you’re away? 

A pet sitter visit will definitely help in this area.

What dogs are best for someone who works away from home 8-10 hours a day?

An older trained dog with less energy would be ideal for someone with this schedule. 

Should you leave your pet in a crate while you’re away? 

Our first dog loved the feeling of protection that a crate can provide. Some breeds may not tolerate it.

One of Old Town Spring's quintessential eateries, Puffabelly's Old Depot Restaurant is a casual American diner which serves staples such as burgers, chicken fried steaks, and fried catfish. Opened in 1995, Puffabellys took inspiration from the original railroad depot location that caught on fire. Now, Puffabellys is known for the hand-pattied burger and great music and atmosphere. The restaurant is located in Old Town Spring at 100 Main St, Spring, TX 77373. 

Wunsche Bros. Cafe & Saloon

Another eatery you don’t want to miss is Wunsche Bros. Café & Saloon, and this summer is a great time to visit. The Texas Historical Landmark celebrates its 120 year-anniversary in 2022 as Old Town Spring’s oldest establishment in its original location.

Brothers Charlie and Dell Wunsche of one of Spring’s earliest families opened Wunsche Bros as a hotel, saloon, and brothel in 1902 for the area’s railroad workers and travelers. The two-story building with rich Texas history sits next to the railroad tracks at 103 Midway St. You can read more about Wunsche Bros’ history here.

Today, Wunsche Bros offers a variety of American foods and signature Campfire Fares, including smoked chicken and pork cooked in the kitchen smoker. The dessert menu includes Wunsche Bros’ legendary Chocolate Whiskey Cake, first offered the day Prohibition began.

Cool Off This Summer at Hurricane Harbor Splashtown

Located about a mile from Old Town Spring and three miles from The Mark apartments, Six Flags' Hurricane Harbor Splashtown is a great place to bring the kids for a day of fun during Houston area's sweltering summer months. You’ll find thrilling, wet rides for both kids and adults in addition to a Texas-sized pool and lazy river.
 
If you do plan to visit, be aware the park is only open on weekends until the end of May. Hours, which can be subject to change, are posted on the website.  Also, the park only accepts credit cards and mobile payments, including for parking. Cash to card devices are located onsite. ExxonMobil recently announced relocating their Irving corporate headquarters to their campus in Spring, Texas, north of Houston. The plan to relocate is targeted to be completed by mid-2023.

The move comes as a plan to reorganize ExxonMobil's business structure, centralize their three business lines, and promote collaboration and integration. Darren Woods, chairman and chief executive officer, stated in the press release, "Closer collaboration and the new streamlined business model will enable the company to grow shareholder value and position ExxonMobil for success through the energy transition."
 
The new ExxonMobil Houston Campus with 20 buildings is located on 385 acres in City Place, just west of 1-45 and about 30 minutes from downtown Houston. With the move, many ExxonMobil employees will be relocating as well and looking to call City Place their new home. If you’re a current resident at The Mark, you don’t even need to go that far to revel in all the holiday cheer. In fact, all you need to do is stroll on over to City Place Plaza. The plaza hosts all kinds of seasonal events, including the Giant Gingerbread Village, open Nov. 22, 2025 through Jan. 11, 2026. Follow a trail of giant candy canes, lollipops, and cookie trees to a 16-foot-tall house and a 12-foot-tall windmill in the Gingerbread Village. 

This year's annual "Oh, What Fun! Holiday Tree Lighting Celebration" at City Place is set for Nov. 30th from 3pm-7pm. The event, free to attend, includes a Holiday Market, a play area filled with snow and other seasonal activities plus the tree lighting at dusk.  

On Dec. 6, enjoy trackless train rides from 3:30 PM – 5:30 PM before watching The Polar Express at 5:48 PM. Both the train rides and holiday movie are free.

Experience the beauty of the Mexican culture and celebrate Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) October 28-31, 2021, at City Place Plaza in Spring TX. Most of the fun, festive events are free to attend, although some offer tickets for VIP access loaded with extras. 

The four-day celebration begins Thursday, October 28th, with a Black Dinner on the waterfront for 50 guests with tickets. The special event featuring a four-course dinner with wine pairings, Catrina face painting, flower crowns and unveiling of a traditional altar to honor passed loved ones is from 6pm – 10pm. Tickets cost $150 per person. 

The Dia de los Muertos festivities continue Friday evening with Calacas & Cocktails from 5pm – 9pm. Sip margaritas, available from the cash bar, while enjoying live music at the party on The Plaza. The event is free to attend; however, $35 VIP access tickets are also available. 

On Saturday, The Plaza transforms into the Mercado, a festive market where you can shop from a variety of Mexican folk-art vendors and artisans while enjoying traditional music and DJs throughout the day. Face painting and activities for kids will also be available. The Mercado is free to attend, but, like Friday's party on The Plaza, $35 VIP access tickets are available. 

A free Family Movie Night with face painting and kids' activities on Sunday wraps up the Dia de los Muertos at City Place Plaza. Screening of the Pixar classic, "CoCo" begins at 6pm.
